directed by Andrzej Żuławski (Diabeł, Poland 1972–88, 119 min.)

Poland 1793. The country is occupied by Prussia and young Jakub is in prison on a charge of conspiracy. A mysterious stranger swathed in black releases him from prison. Travelling across the country, Jakub discovers horror and dissolution. Renowned for its visual and narrative excesses bordering on horror, the film was banned by the regime, de facto forcing Żuławski to seek shelter in France.
