by Radu Jude, Romania, 2017, 83 min., original version with Italian subtitles
This documentary, by the great film director Radu Jude who has won awards for his earlier work at the Festivals of Berlin and Locarno, consists solely of a truly exceptional collection of photographs of a small country town in Romania taken by portrait photographer Costică Acsinte in the 1930s and '40s. The soundtrack accompanying these "fragments of parallel lives" consists of excerpts from the – highly topical and very relevant – diary that Jewish medic, writer and poet Emil Dorian kept in those same years, putting the story shown in the photographs into words, narrating the daily growth of anti-Semitism that was to lead to the shocking persecution of Jews by the Romanians, an issue rarely addressed today.
