directed by Robert Altman, starring Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore and Tim Robbins, USA 1993, 188 min., 35mm, Italian version
Altman adapts for the screen nine tales and a poem by Raymond Carver, the unquestioned master of literary minimalism, to produce yet another universally acclaimed masterpiece. In its medley of genres and tones, this immense chapter in his American saga portrays our lives with a mercilessly direct style and a grieving spirit of participation. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice, tying with Kieślowski’s Three Colours (Blue), and a special Coppa Volpi for the cast as a whole.
