The starting point of Danica Dakić’s new production LA CASA, which stretches from Weimar to Rome is the Goethe’s Weimar residence. At the centre of this trilogy of two films and a leporello are the empty private library — due to renovation work — and a backdrop of a volcano for a puppet theatre belonging to Goethe’s son August.

The film sets in Rome and Weimar became performative spaces for a (utopian) journey through the convulsions and seismic shifts of past and future, between dream and trauma. On a graphic level, a leporello takes up one of Goethe’s aphorisms from Zahme Xenien: “The old man slumbers as does the child and we, like the humans we are, all sleep atop volcanoes”, which refers to a state of existential threat, but also to the fragility and beauty of life.

The trilogy LA CASA 2022/2023 was commissioned by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and additionally supported by the Villa Massimo Rome and the Comune di Ladispoli.
