Muerte di un Ciclista - cinema review

29 may 2012

(Spain 1955)
directed by Juan Antonio Bardem, starring Lucia Bosè, Alberto Closas, Otello Toso, Carlos Casaravilla
b/w,  88', 35mm Italian dubbed version
A car accidently runs over a man on a bicycle, leaving the rider in agony. A couple of secret lovers are at the wheel. But later an acquaintance of the female passenger threatens to tell everything to her husband. The film revealed director Bardem's great talent: the hypocrisy of the middle classes and the lack of power of intellectuals during general Franco's regime are both mercilessly exposed.  Bardem nonetheless manages to sustain an exciting and melodramatic detection plot. Starring a very young and gorgeous Lucia Bosè.
