A commentator in 1493 considered Botticelli's work to have a "virile tone" to it, while he felt that Filippino's (and Perugino's) painting possessed "a sweeter air". This unexpected and in many ways unusual view is the starting point for an exploration of public taste at the time, shedding a totally new light, for our "modern" sensibilities, on the art of the era.
