Eisenstein's last great movie is a deep and powerful reflection on history and politics.  Completed in 1946, it was immediately condemned by the Party, which only lifted the ban on it in 1958, because behind the grandiose celebration of absolute power, it hinted at the huge contradictions and the cruelty that surrounded that power.
