This is the short but fascinating story of a painting, the "Crucifixion" of Monte San Giusto in the province of Macerata, the heartland of the rural Marche.  It is the tale of Lorenzo Lotto and of Leonardo Bonafede, a priest in love with his village who commissioned the picture:  an account of the significance and value of a painting that is a self-contained sacred representation, living theater, a riotously wonderful dramatic performance.
